I’m at The World of Speed (more photos to come) and I can’t figure sonething out. Why do all the Nascar type cars have a hole or a pipe in the taillight? See photo.. My guess is gas tank vent of something... anyone know for sure?

Yeah it's a fuel tank vent. You'll see gas spilling out of it (well used to at least) when they leave the pits with a full tank.

Those are overflows for fuel. It used to be that fuel could not flow back into the filling tank when the cars tank was full so you had someone with a catch can that connected to that port to catch the extra fuel. Today they have a tube on the front of the filling tank that collects the overflow.

It was for fuel overflow/venting. They used to attach a catch can to that pipe as there was no venting in the fuel can. Nascar ended up going to self venting cans eliminating the need for the catch can and that tube

Fuel overflow/vent pipe. The gas man would fill until fuel splashed out and someone had a catch can attached to the pipe. This was to make sure the tank was filled properly as the tank didn’t have a way to vent otherwise. I don’t believe they have them anymore.

Ah the good old days when “catch can man” was a thing, and we’d occasionally get to enjoy the spectacle when the catch can got stuck on the back of the car and the catch can man would flail after it.

As was said, it’s a fuel vent. Some series’ let the gas pour out, while others (like the old ASA teams) would have a dedicated “catch can man” during fuel stops. When the fuel starts flowing from the tube into the catch can, the catch can man raises his hand so the fueler knows it’s full, then everyone runs behind the wall before they get hit by a Mustang race car. Below is a pic of a rather husky catch can man in action!

I was the intermittent “catch can man” on various ASA teams when I was in high school in the mid 90s!

Thats back when Men were Men, and the fuel can guy smoked a cigarette while refueling the car. Burns were for the weak, you would put out the fires with a stern glance. Not like those pussies today who start screaming for a fire extinguisher as soon as their torso catches fire.
